A-G
The intent of the "a-g" Subject Requirements is to ensure that students can participate fully in the first-year
program at the University in a wide variety of fields of study. The requirements are written deliberately for
the benefit of all students expecting to enter the University, and not for preparation for specific majors.
You can learn more about the "a-g" requirements at the sites available on this page.

requirements and conform to school curricular reform efforts. In addition to detailed information about the "a-g" requirements,
the site provides numerous UC-approved course descriptions of standard, honors, and innovative courses.
The "a-g" Guide facilitates a thorough understanding of the UC course approval process.

California State University College Mentor
The CSU requires a minimum 15-unit pattern of courses for admission as a first-time freshman. Each unit is equal to a
year of study in a subject area. A grade of C or higher is required for each course you use to meet any subject requirement.

California State University College Tools
The University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) require entering freshmen to complete certain
courses in high school. These courses are called the "a-g" courses because of the letter each subject area
is assigned: "a" is for History/Social Science, "b" is for English, and so on. To receive "a-g" credit, a high school course
must be certified through the UC course approval process.
